One pedestrian was killed and another was critically injured after being struck by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) bus late Monday in West Hollywood.

The collision occurred around 11:45 p.m. near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Palm Avenue, according to Sgt. Andrew Bedogne, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Transit Services Bureau. The bus was traveling eastbound when it struck the two victims, who were crossing Santa Monica Boulevard. Bedogne said it was unclear whether the pedestrians were in a crosswalk when they were struck, and the incident is being investigated by detectives from the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station.

“West Hollywood deputies were on the scene first, and the two victims were transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” he added. “One victim was ultimately deceased, and the other remains in critical condition.”

Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo said the bus was out of service and was heading toward the Metro District 7 bus depot near Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards when the collision occurred. He said the driver was a man, but no further information is being released pending the outcome of the investigation.

In addition to the sheriff’s department investigation, Metro will be conducting its own inquiry, which will likely take approximately two weeks, Ubaldo said.

Bedogne said the victims were not being identified pending notification of next of kin. He described them as male adults. Santa Monica Boulevard was closed most of the night while detectives conducted the investigation, and it reopened around 6 a.m., Bedogne said.
