Violent crimes up in LASD area

As of the end of July 2012, preliminary crime data showed that reported overall incidents of violent crimes (Part 1) have increased 4.91 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part I) have increased by 6.07 percent in sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. The numbers combine to show a 5.86 percent increase in overall Part I crimes.

In comparison, the five-year change in year to date crime rate for July, crime data showed that reported overall incidents of violent crimes reported (Part 1) have decreased 21.78 percent, and serious property crimes reported (Part 1) have decreased by 14.54 percent in sheriff’s patrol areas countywide. The numbers combined to show a 16 percent decrease in overall Part 1 crimes.

As of the end of July 2012, preliminary reported crime data shows that criminal homicides decreased by 13.89 percent in sheriff’s patrol areas (91 in 2012 compared to 104 in 2011), and have decreased by 41.51 percent (160 homicides) compared to five years ago. Last year had the lowest homicide rate (allowing for population changes) in Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol areas since 1965.
