A fire erupted in a vacant apartment building in Koreatown on Monday, causing major damage to the primary building where the blaze originated, and forcing 10 residents to evacuate from an adjacent single-family residence. The fire was reported around 5:40 p.m. in a two-story apartment building undergoing renovations at 1017 S. Berendo Ave., just south of Olympic Boulevard. Approximately 100 firefighters extinguished the blaze in 40 minutes. A large portion of the apartment building was destroyed.  Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said the blaze also damaged a portion of the second level of the adjacent home, as well as the roof of an electronics store directly to the north on Olympic Boulevard. Ten adults were evacuated from the residence and the American Red Cross assisted them in finding shelter. The electronics store was also evacuated and remained closed Tuesday. The blaze caused approximately $525,000 in damage to the buildings. The cause remains under investigation, Scott added.
