Andy Griffith Remembered
By Edwin Folven, 7/05/2012
The community is mourning the death of actor Andy Griffith, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86. Griffith is widely remembered for his role as Sheriff Andy Taylor in the “The Andy Griffith Show”, but is also memorable for his portrayal of a lawyer in the series “Matlock”, which ran for nine seasons in the 1980s.
In addition, Griffith was an Grammy Award winning gospel signer and appeared in roles on the silver screen in the 1950s in films such as “No Time for Sergeants” and “Destiny Rides Again”. Griffith was originally from North Carolina, where he lived most of his life. He passed away in his home in Roanoke Island, North Carolina.
Griffith will forever be linked to the Hollywood area through the opening segment of the “Andy Griffith Show”, in which Sheriff Andy Taylor and his son Opie (played by actor and director Ron Howard) walk past a lake near the fictional town of Mayberry. The segment was actually filmed at a small lake in the Franklin Canyon area in the Hollywood Hills. Flowers were placed Tuesday Griffith’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located at 6418 Hollywood Blvd.
