The family of Marie Hardwick and local law enforcement are seeking the public’s help in locating and identifying the driver of a dark-colored BMW that struck Hardwick as she left LACMA two weeks ago.

After watching “The Clock” at LACMA with a friend on March 24, the 24-year-old English native was using the crosswalk at the intersection of Spaulding Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard at approximately 2 a.m. when she was struck by the BMW.

The impact severely injured Hardwick, said her mother, Jessica. She said her daughter suffered two broken legs, a broken kneecap, a broken jaw and several other injuries. Hardwick, an artist from East L.A., has been released from the hospital, but will not be able to use her legs for a couple months. She’ll also need dental reconstruction.

“She has a very long recovery in front of her,” Jessica said.

The BMW did not stop. According to Det. Brent Johnson, of LAPD’s West Traffic Division, multiple people were in the crosswalk at the time, including Hardwick’s friend. He said it is probable that the BMW ran a red light while heading westbound, striking only the victim. Hardwick originally thought that the BMW had no license plates, but she now believes that it may have a front custom European license plate and could have been a convertible. She said the vehicle’s side mirror was knocked off and left at the scene, but police believe the car should have additional front end or side damage. The car did not have rear plates.

Jessica said the family is requesting the public’s help in catching the driver, who “completely uprooted her life and career.”

“It’s not going to change her condition … [but] someone needs to be held accountable,” she said. “People shouldn’t be able to get away with stuff like that.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact detective Johnson at (213)473-0222. For the 24-hour line, call (877)527-3247.
