A series of planned power outages will affect over 100 customers in West Hollywood over the next couple of weeks, according to the city’s website. The outages, which have been scheduled by Southern California Edison, are happening so that the company can replace deteriorated power poles and switches in the area. All customers who are expected to temporarily lose power should have been notified by mail at least a week in advance, said Mark Olson, the regional manager for Southern California Edison.

The first outage, which occurred on Tuesday, affected 19 customers in the area. Workers from Edison shut down road access on Doheny Drive, Hammond Street, and Vista Grande to set up their cranes. The areas affected are mostly residential, and Olson said that the company is doing its best to make the outages as painless as possible.

“We have had concerns from customers from West Hollywood, but we try to work with them to minimize the inconvenience,” he said. “There was a concern about one of the outages, which was scheduled during the 405 closure, and we did reschedule that outage.”

The rest of the outages are planned for this week and next, and Olson suggests that customers in affected areas have flashlights, manual can openers, battery-operated radios, and surge protectors on hand. He also advises customers to be aware of the locations of their fuse boxes and circuit breakers, in case of complications.

“This is important work that we’re doing,” said Olson. “If it wasn’t planned, a component could fail that would cause more damage.”
