For residents interested in everything from a complete interior remodel to accessories to brighten up a single room, The Avenues: Art, Fashion and Design District in West Hollywood offers a multitude of choices for completing a project. Known as “The Avenues”, the district stretches from La Cienega Boulevard to Doheny Drive, and from Santa Monica to Beverly boulevards. Ryan Farber, executive director for The Avenues, said retailers in the area formed a business improvement district (BID) in 1996 to showcase their unique offerings, and the neighborhood has grown to include approximately 250 businesses. While most primarily specialize in interior design, there are also art galleries, restaurants and fashion retailers.
“We think of The Avenues as a premiere destination on the West Coast for design, but we also have an amazing amount of fashion and art,” Farber said. “You can walk around The Avenues in a day and can completely furnish your house, put some art on the wall, and have lunch or dinner. It’s a top design destination, and everything is open to the public.”
The Avenues is anchored by the Pacific Design Center, which houses dozens of showrooms specializing in high-end interior design. Other design retailers such as Alessi, B&B Italia, Commune, Inner Gardens, Minotti, Rose Tarlow and Waterworks are also located within The Avenues. In addition to being a local destination, the businesses cater to design professionals from around the country and the world.
“The Avenues is one of the most exciting commercial areas in the Southern California,” West Hollywood City Councilman John Heilman said. “There is no doubt the businesses in West Hollywood set the trends others follow.”
Farber said The Avenues host regular special events to showcase the businesses, such as “Design Intersects Everything Made” (DIEM), an event each October with panel discussions on the latest trends and open houses at design showrooms. There are also regular events such as the “Beverly Block Party”, a District-wide floor sample sale and “Structures + Style”, a guided walking and shuttle tour offering participants a behind-the-scenes look at the latest design and architecture concepts.
