Fairfax High Forms Principal Search Panel

A committee of teachers, administrators, parents and students has been formed to help the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) select a new principal for Fairfax High School.

The 12-member committee, which was formalized last week, will be led by Fairfax teachers Joel Freeman and Randy Grant, and will include Pierson Blaetz, co-founder of the Greenway Art Alliance and the Friends of Fairfax, and Joyce Kleifield, development director for the school, among others. Blaetz said the committee will be meeting weekly on campus, and is currently in the initial stages of developing new job criteria for the position. The group will examine ways to improve the curriculum, and to continue building relationships in the community, Blaetz said. The LAUSD is responsible for hiring a new principal and will be accepting applications from qualified candidates, but reached out to the school to assist in the selection process. Candidates will likely be vetted by the committee, and Blaetz said the process is expected to last into the summer. He added that the committee may seek public input as the selection process proceeds.

The school’s previous principal, Ed Zubiate, retired on Feb. 29 after six years at the campus. The district temporarily replaced Zubiate with interim principal, Robert Di Pietro.
