Robbery Detectives Seek Additional Victims of Street Robbery Suspect

By Edwin Folven, 4/19/2012

LAPD Investigators are searching for additional victims of a suspect who allegedly impersonated a police officer and committed at least seven street robberies.

The suspect, 42-year-old George Turegano, of Fontana, has been charged for robberies that occurred in between Sept. 16, 2009, and July 18, 2010. Turegano was arrested by LAPD Robbery Homicide detectives on August 10, 2010, but was released on bail during criminal proceedings. On March 3, he allegedly committed a new street robbery at 7th Street and Mateo Avenue in downtown Los Angeles while impersonating an officer. He was re-arrested on April 2 by officers assigned to the LAPD/FBI Fugitive Task Force, and is currently being held on $575,000 bail.

Beginning on Sept. 16, 2009, Turegano allegedly began committing street robberies by walking up to, or at times driving up behind his victims and identifying himself as a police officer. He reportedly dressed in plain clothes, wore a badge around his neck, had a set of handcuffs, and was armed with a handgun. Turegano would allegedly detain the victims, at times by handcuffing them, and search them and their cars. He would generally take the victims’ money before running or driving away. He was seen driving a gray 2005 Chevrolet Suburban, and a gray 2004 Chrysler Sebring. The robberies occurred near 6th Street and Bonnie Brae Avenue, in the 3400 block of 15th Street, in the 2900 block of Barranca Avenue, and near 8th Street and Union Avenue. Additional hold-ups occurred near 11th Street and Burlington Avenue, and in the 1400 block of south Bonnie Brae Avenue. Turegano is Hispanic, five-feet-eight-inches tall and 220 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes.
