Fans to Wax Nostalgic on Record Store Day

Change is constant. Cassettes replaced vinyl records, CDs replaced cassettes and over the last decade, digital files have become the leader in music formats.

But for the past five years, that hasn’t stopped music fans from celebrating — and shopping at — brick-and-mortar music stores with the celebration of Record Store Day.

The event is Saturday, with hundreds of shops across the country holding special events and sales.

“It’s the tactile act of seeing and touching a piece of art that has been created for you to have,” said Kara Lane, marketing director for Amoeba Music in Hollywood.

Amoeba has taken part in Record Store Day since 2008 and the crowds have consistently grown, Lane said.

Last year, before the store opened, a line of about 1,000 shoppers already stretched along the sidewalk outside, she said.

“It’s been a crazy, great busy day,” she said.

The cavernous store is filled with row upon row of CDs and albums spanning genres from opera to heavy metal.

LPs have seen a jump in sales in recent years thanks in part to indie rock artists, with indie stalwart labels such as Sub Pop now regularly offering vinyl editions of new releases as a standard.

“There’s people who never gave up LPs … or people who didn’t grow up with them and are now exploring,” Lane said.

The first Record Store Day was held at Rasputin Music in San Francisco with a performance by Metallica, and it has grown to celebrate more than 700 independent stores across the U.S., according to information at www.recordstoreday.com.

In addition to sales, many stores stock special Record Store Day releases or host in-store events.

Amoeba is hosting three guest DJ sets, giveaways and a special Record Store Day party at nearby Space15Twenty with the David Lynch Foundation.

Participating Record Store Day shops are defined as standalone brick-and-mortar retailers whose business focuses on a physical store location with at least 50 percent music retail, is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70 percent located in the state of operation.
