Officers shot and wounded a machete-wielding suspect on Oct. 22 after he slashed a victim multiple times, commandeered a food truck, and then crashed the truck in the 3900 block of Beverly Boulevard.

The incidents occurred around 4:00 a.m., when officers from the Los Angele Police Department’s Olympic Division responded to a 911 call of an assault with a deadly weapon in progress. Arriving officer observed a food truck that had just crashed into several parked vehicles, one block east of the location the caller reported. The officers observed two men inside the food truck, and one of them exited the vehicle armed with a machete covered in blood. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the machete, and then deployed a Taser, which reportedly had no effect. The suspect continued to ignore orders to drop the machete and confront the officers, who fired several rounds. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The second individual in the truck, who was determined to be a customer who had been eating at the truck when he was kidnapped by the suspect, had multiple slash and stab wounds and was covered in blood. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition, and is expected to survive. No officers were injured, and no motive was given for the attack. The LAPD Force Investigation Division will also investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is routine with all shootings that occur with on duty officers.
